Pack Odds Explained: What Published Pull Rates Mean

Pack Odds Explained: What Published Pull Rates Mean

If you have ever opened a pack of trading cards, you have wondered about the odds. Most games keep them vague. On eras the odds are printed on every chapter before you buy, and this post explains exactly what they mean.

The four tiers

Every chapter is 500 cards: ten moments, 50 cards each. Within each moment the cards are split across four tiers:

TierPull rateCards per momentCards per chapter
Platinum2%110
Gold8%440
Silver30%15150
Bronze60%30300

A pack costs $5 and holds one card.

What 2% means for one pack

When a chapter is fresh, any single pack has a 2-in-100 chance of being Platinum. Put another way: on average, about one pack in fifty is Platinum. "On average" matters. You could pull Platinum on your first pack, or open many packs without one. Each pack is its own draw.

The odds follow what is left

Because a chapter has a fixed number of cards, the odds move as cards sell. If the ten Platinum cards are still available but half the Bronze cards are gone, the chance of Platinum on the next pack is a little higher than 2%. If the Platinum cards are already pulled, the chance is zero.

That is why every chapter page shows live pull chances and the cards left in each tier, not only the starting rates. Check it before you buy.

Why publish the odds at all?

Two reasons:

  • Trust. A rare card only means something if the rarity is real. Fixed counts and published odds mean nobody can quietly print more Platinum cards.
  • Fair trading. When everyone knows a Platinum is 1 of 50 per moment, the marketplace can price it with full information.

Pulled a duplicate?

Trade it. On the marketplace you can list any card at your own asking price (up to twice what you paid, plus fees) or make offers on the cards you are missing. Completing a set is half the fun.

Loyalty rewards

10% of every sale on a creator's chapters goes into a rewards pool that is shared with cardholders every two weeks. Higher tiers receive a larger share, like elite status on an airline. Rewards come as credits you can spend on eras; rates can change and no amount is guaranteed.
